:
This code represents the type of material used in the construction of the surface of the road in the primary or secondary direction of travel as defined by FHWA and modified by CDOT. Segment breaks should be recorded at the exact location where the pavement type changes. Partial pavement type changes, such as patch work and concrete pads at bus-stops should not be recorded. There are two groups of input codes for the surface type: Field Input and Detailed Input. The field input is a simplified list of the surface types, which can be readily identified from the data collection vehicle. The detailed input codes are more specific to the actual composition of the pavement. While it may be difficult or impossible for field personnel to determine which of the detailed surface type codes apply to the pavement type, the availability of as-built drawings and/or a more detailed review of the hotographic/video record may allow for the more descriptive codes to be used.
