This theme depicts adjustments made to boundaries of 2010 Census-designated Urban Areas having a population of 5,000 or more, to encompass areas outside of Census boundaries that have urban characteristics with residential, commercial, industrial, or national defense land uses consistent with or related to the development patterns within the Census boundary. Adjustments were also made to smooth and clarify points of transition between urban vs. rural roadway classifications where roadways may repeatedly snake in and out of the Census-designated boundaries. These adjusted boundaries were determined cooperatively between the Colorado Department of Transportation and local transportation planning officials and approved by the Governor of Colorado and the Federal Highways Administration in December 2014.
